It’s very easy to lose weight even during the winter months, it’s important to follow the training and nutrition tips I bring in this text. How to lose weight during the winter will not be an impossible mission.

Winter is the period of the year when it is almost inevitable to get a kilo of surplus, mostly because of the holidays when the tables are full of fatty and sweet foods.

In addition, cold and short days are affected so that most of us stay in front of the TV, ignoring physical activity. Also, every invitation to a celebration is more likely to be accepted than staying in a warm home to do some light exercises.

Overall, it does not matter if you have got 2 or 5 pounds, it’s important that you can lose weight right away during the winter.

The results of various studies have shown that for most people the winter is the ideal time to lose weight. Paradoxically, is not it? All you need to do is to raise the level of activity and more carefully select food.

Cold weather influences a lot more calories in different activities than in other seasons, so it’s all about losing the few pounds you received in the past months.

1. Proper Nutrition

Fill your plate with proteins. This will help you feel a longer sieve and lower your blood sugar levels.

Always have water or tea at hand. Research shows that 75 percent of Westerners are chronically dehydrated, and this very often intertwines with hunger. Proper water consumption can prevent unnecessary snacking and save your energy.

Get smart carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are not enemies. You can eat bread and pasta, but pay attention to the quality, quantity and time of consumption. Carbohydrates that can saturate you are also found in vegetables or can affect the body as proteins and fibers (beans, dairy products …).

These foods should be the largest part of your daily intake of food. You can eat bread, rice, pasta or starch after training/activity because then the body can make the best use of it.

Do not skip meals. The worst thing you can do is to go hungry for a festive lunch or party. Everything that is placed on the table will look great and you will hardly refrain from overeating. Eat normally during the day.

2. Regular Physical Activity

Okay, it’s cold outside and it’s snowing, and … you need to go to a party or socializing. Or simply, in an hour your favorite TV series starts. Would not it be great to skip regular training? Well, in fact, this is the worst possible idea.

Simply shorten it, but still do some heating exercises, then a couple of shorter series of exercises on a parterre suitable for home conditions and eventually stretch. All this will not take you more than twenty minutes and you’ll feel great … and get to the party!

Use cold and short days to learn some new exercises. For example, various types of yoga are interesting ways to get started and warm up, and can be practiced in the room.

Keep a log of your activities every day. You may have lost the exercise rhythm around the holiday or have paused, but now is the ideal time to control yourself.

If you do not have time to practice, try to collect 5 km of walking per day but outside.

More movement, less overeating during rest. Walking through the forest with friends, sledding with children or sliding with friends is a great alternative to cakes and sweets, and you will also be physically active. 3. Drink More Water

A beverage that can help you get rid of excess pounds is all around you and that’s of course water. If you are trying to conserve healthy, intense, and regular exercise, but you have not yet removed excess pounds, there is a chance that you do not drink enough water.

It is very common that people do not consume enough water, and this is why it can hide the reason why they can not take excess pounds.

In addition, water is an excellent beauty treatment, because when you enter adequate quantities and the skin is hydrated and looks fresh and younger.

    Many people don’t realize how food and the lack of activity can prevent you to lose weight, but also to maintain a healthy life.

    Also, the role of water is forgotten sometimes.

    Good food, 3 to 5 times a week exercise can really make the difference.

    ‘Tis the season to be merry and keep the weight off! I’m making a conscious effort not to overeat and stay away from the sweets this year. Since mostly eating and relaxing, being relatively inactive, is a given during the holidays I have started upping my walks from around 7km to 10km starting now. I am committed to continue to walk every other day at the least, all the way through the new year. My new years resolution will just be to continue living the same way and not changing this habit.     Thank you for sharing this important post. As you said during winter many people get fat because going out becomes a problem so people prefer to stay home eating,drinking and watching tv only which leads them to being fat. Thank you for letting us know that proteins lower blood sugar level which is not bad to health. Doing indoor physical training will be profitable too.

    It’s always after reading articles like this that I feel lucky that my choice of cardio is daily running (5 miles a day), as I can always (just about) carry it out through the winter months. I can actually remember running in snow in my twenties – but I wouldn’t really recommend anyone else to attempt that!

    You’re definitely telling the truth. I have found some good values in reading this article. Of course winter can be a time that if care is not taking you can gain more weight than any other time in the year due to festivity and other activities.

    Your idea of taking in more water is very reasonable, since such a practice will help control our intake of unnecessary snacking and even saving energy as well. I think 75% of water in the body would be very good to help the body stay hydrated.

    Also, than for the advice on not skipping meals just because there is a party ahead. Doing so will only make you over-eat with hunger and will lead to gaining more weight than losing.

    I think we can’t talk about losing weight and leave exercise. For me it is one of the best ways of losing some pounds and I will always continue to make it part of my daily routeing no matter what activities goes on in the year.

    Great article Daniel and so very true.  I am always hungrier during the winter months.  And I crave carbs badly so I end up putting on at least 2 or 3 kilograms each winter.   It’s one of the reasons I invested in a treadmill so that I could exercise indoors rather than having to worry about getting caught in bad weather if I wanted to go for a run or walk my dog.  I usually spend an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill during winter but I always end up a few kilograms heavier no matter what I do.  I always lose it during the summer months so it kind of balances everything out.

    I used to be quite fat but after doing exercise 4 times a week, I gradually slim down. But it has to be complement with drinking only plain water and eat less carbohydrate. I stuffed myself with more eggs, vegetables and fish. Skip mostly bread and rice. It really works well.

    Great article!  You said so much here that I needed to hear.  I try to eat healthy, but I also notice that on the days that I forget to drink plenty of water I get major sugar cravings!  NOT good!  I also really love my bread and rice.  So it’s really good to hear that I don’t have to completely give up on my favorite things.  Thank you 🙂

    Thanks for the great post, Daniel.  Some of my heart-people have a really difficult time maintaining their regimen of discipline during the holidays and the post made some points that are very sensible.  

    The temptation to slack off and relax their discipline is enormous during the holidays.  Some of them go hog-wild.  (No blame to them!  Sheesh!  If you’re a foodie, it is well-nigh impossible to resist all that lovely, lovely stuff.)

    As winter is just around the corner, many of us tend to skip the physical activity, but the minimum 30 minutes daily walk should be done, if someone doesn’t have time for a longer workout. The physical activity will keep us in shape because, as you mentioned we eat more carbohydrates during the winter.

    It has been a struggle to drink more water in the winter months as I drink a lot of coffee to stay warm. Is there a difference in drinking cold, hot, or even room temperature water than can effect weight loss or even hydration?

      Yes, it a little hard to drink water in cold days but it is not impossible. It is recommended to drink cold water in the morning half an hour before breakfast, as your body will get more hydrated and cold water will burn some calories.

    Hi Daniel,

    People are really prone to gain weight during the winter season and the holidays due to reasons that you stated. I usually notice my pants getting tighter during this time. Oh well, it’s only once a year that the season is so festive ( lol ).

    I didn’t know that water accelerates metabolism, thanks for the info. I love to drink water, but before sleeping I try to minimize it because I don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night to go the bathroom.

    I also try to walk at work taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walk to the next busstop as much as possible. But I’m bad at exercising regularly because of too many stuff that needs to be done at home.

    It seems a paradox that the best months to lose weight are during the winter. Your suggestions are reasonable.

    I think you have placed proper nutrition as number 1 purposely. And I do think it’s very important. The thing is that it’s difficult during the holiday season to avoid eating things that aren’t so healthy. But balancing our diet, drinking abundant water and not skipping regular training must keep us on track! Thank you for these useful ideas. I’ll put them into practice these months that are ahead!

    This is a brilliant post for me because from what I can see, most of the humans around me (and me I guess) think that we need to partially hibernate in winter! We also eat more and move less as you have said.

    The main points I got are Water, Diet and Exercise. I think that if I can get these healthy habits to replace the bad ones I will be set. It is often harder to exercise in winter because of the mental block, but a good session can actually warm you up quite nicely.

    I think that water is also very important. I read somewhere that the body can ‘tell’ you its hungry when its actually thirsty which is why many people eat too much food and don’t drink enough water.

    I am inspired to push though the excuses this winter! I think you can convince yourself to do it in winter, you can handle the other months too.
